2004 Eastern Sierras, CA. While wandering around the grounds of the train museum, I found my way into the dusty old miner's cabin at the back of the lot. There was a disturbing, discordant sound coming from the cabin. Lots of odds and ends sitting about, an old bed, tin cups, an old stove, but in the tiny back room there was a piano. A child was banging away at it, making the music of children. It was in bad shape, the kind of shape you might expect from something making that kind of noise. The keys were out of whack, others were missing all together, and the cover was missing. Perfect, I thought. There was a small window on the north side of the room, through which light was being reflected off an adjacent building. This is actually a remake of a shot I previously took. I was unsatisfied with the first one shot about 3 years earlier. I wanted the contrasty tones of Pan-F (I had originally used Delta 100) and I wanted a slightly different composition. The above image is damn close (no image is ever perfect) to what I was after. |
